Beginning again
Greetings,
It is that time of the year. Once, I used to use the end and the start of the year as an opportunity to reset. Now, it generally feels like a continuation, building on what has already been done. The lead up to Christmas was spent briefing out articles for a client to ensure that when January 3rd hit, there was already writing to be edited and submitted. Plus, taking a break felt strange. A friend suggested taking some time out for myself but I have worked long and hard to get to the point where I do that on a regular basis, sometimes even daily. It was, however, nice not to have an alarm set for the days between Christmas Day and New Year’s eve. While I am back at work, it will probably feel more like work when the children go back to school and I have to start the day earlier.
I am, however, taking the opportunity to revisit the different platforms that I share in, including this newsletter. I do enjoy sharing links to the different things I find interesting - and I hope you do too - but I am also contemplating adding, on occasion, regular thoughts on various things. We’ll see how that goes. The internal debate is whether to do so here or on my site.
And there’s still my podcast Listen To Your Footsteps which has been on a forced hiatus for the last two months.
Thinking out loud ….
Another project I am involved in is the revival of the publication Ogojiii, as a writer-driven community focused on African Innovation in Design, Enterprise and Current Affairs. We have a Medium publication where we publish writing from across the continent and the diaspora. We also have a monthly-ish newsletter.
Gonzo journalism is defined as “a style of journalism that features the author as its protagonist, simultaneously experiencing and reporting on a story from a first-person point of view. The writer becomes part of the story, portraying events through their own experience, which offers readers their version of the truth,” according to Masterclass. It is synonymous is Hunter S. Thompson whose Letter on Finding Your Purpose and Living a Meaningful Life is dope.
It seems January 2 is World Introvert Day. Writing is Networking for Introverts.
I’d like to think I know Africa quite well. At least I did until I played You Don’t Know Africa. Ironically, it was a link in an American newsletter that I subscribe to.
Taking pictures for the ‘gram has resulted in my various Cloud storage platforms being filled with thousands of pictures. And there is no order across them. I continue to promise myself that, one day, soon, I will move everything to one space and delete the pictures I don’t want. How to Backup and Move Your Photos Between Services.
Pan Macmillan South Africa, the publisher of my book Listen To Your Footsteps, recently held a webinar titled Inside The Publishing Process giving insights into what publishers look for in books.
On December 15th, bell hooks passed away. As with the passing of Greg Tate just before, there has been some great writing on her and her legacy, including Sisonke Msimang’s bell hooks: A Black American voice that reached the world.
