Greetings,
Here are seven things, kinda, that I thought were worth sharing:
I have been using the Headspace app for over a year at least, primarily for the sleep music and sleepcasts (bedtime stories for adults) and the Focus music, during the day. I keep promising myself to meditate more, working my way through the various courses they have, but am still to get there. In a previous newsletter, I briefly talked about my precarious relationship with sleep. As I grow older, the need to repair and improve that relationship becomes even more critical. Headspace shared Sleep 101, a great place to start if you are, like me, trying to sleep better.
The infinite scroll was a game changer, and not necessarily in a good way. Infinite scrolling is when content keeps loading as you scroll down a site or social media platform, without ever actually reaching the bottom. The Infinite Scroll: Why It’s So Addictive and How to Break Free
I have spent the last couple of years trying to figure out how to work better and wrote about it.
The Business of HYPE podcast by Jeff Staple is a definite must-listen for those who are interested in building brands, particularly in the streetwear, sneaker, youth culture, etc space. Having been an avid listener 3/4 years ago, I took a break from it because it was starting to feel like the same conversation, with a different person. This episode with Sebastien Kopp from Veja, however, doesn’t feel like the norm, because of their approach to “creating sneakers in a different way, mixing social projects, economic justice, and ecological materials.”
They aren’t trying to bite off more than they can chew and operating with integrity, when it comes to the relationships with their various suppliers in Brazil, fair trade takes preference over maximising profits.
A subscriber to the newsletter requested more content on cigars, which is something that I enjoy and have been exploring. I have a column over at Business Day’s Wanted Online on the cigar life, as well as on motorcycles. I may have shared this before, but my first cigar column, in July 2021 was A Cigar For Any Time Of The Day Or Night.
There are stories that, when I read them, I wish I could have written them. Or at least had the opportunity to write a story like that. In my case, it is usually with profile features for magazines. When I worked in the space, there was never enough time to properly develop a profile. A favourite is still this Esquire piece on Willem Dafoe. I suspect the fact that a “Less well-known is Dafoe’s practice of keeping a journal, which he’s been doing ‘almost daily’ for more than 40 years” also influenced how I feel about the article and the actor, having first read it when I was really working on being consistent with my journaling.
Dave Grohl talking to Pharrell about who he ‘ripped off’ with his drumming for Nirvana is priceless …
