Find your groove
Greetings,
A symptom of focusing on what’s directly in front of me is days, and sometimes weeks, going by in what seems like a daze. I look up and realise that my memory of the previous hours and days is blurry. I can’t really say whether that is a good or a bad thing. Anyway, here are seven things I wanted to share.
I have friends who are die-hard J Dilla fans. I have always loved Slum Village. But, I will be the first to admit that I didn’t fully understand the level of fandom from so many Dilla people, until now. I just finished reading Dan Charnas’ Dilla Time: The Life and Afterlife of J Dilla, the Hip-Hop Producer Who Reinvented Rhythm and finally get it, fully. Plus, Dilla was behind so many of my favourite joints across genres.
I have been half-heartedly following the lawsuit that four publishers (Hachette, Penguin Random House, HarperCollins, and Wiley) have instituted against Internet Archive around a programme they were running to scan and lend out ebooks. What kind of writer accuses libraries of stealing?
This playlist by Questlove dedicated to Greg Tate has been in high rotation.
Whenever my children tell me something they discovered, my first question is always where they heard it. And if it was online, I always remind them that anyone can put anything they want online. Trolls be gone - “Anonymous users generate most toxic abuse and conspiracy theories online. The right to be anonymous should be curtailed”
I need to try this'; I just have to figure out who to start with: Kevin Smokler does what he calls his ‘Listen Through’ project, which involves going through a favourite artist’s/band’s complete discography of studio albums, making notes as he listen.
Calligraphy is on my long list of things to learn. I often get lost on Seb Lester’s IG feed.
I am overdue a re-read of Cal Newport’s Deep Work which I was reminded of recently, after he featured on Tim Ferriss podcast in an episode titled: Cal Newport — The Eternal Pursuit of Craftsmanship, the Deep Life, Slow Productivity, and a 30-Day Digital Minimalism Challenge
