Delivery mechanism or story?
Greetings,
I have a love-hate relationship with what I consider content delivery mechanisms, whether it is social media, print, audio, video or digital. Over the years, we have allowed and/or been manipulated into letting these, particularly digital, take over our lives. I have spent the last couple of years weaning myself off things like notifications and being ‘always on’ but can’t bring myself to step away totally, because there are also many positives.
For me, what’s important is the story, the substance … how that is delivered is, important, yes, but also secondary to the story. The process, in my mind, has always been, first, figure out what story you want to tell, look at the platforms available and which are best to tell said story, and then craft accordingly. I always start with writing. And I try to always use the platform I own, i.e. my website, as the place to house everything (though I don’t always get it right).
“With the right strategic thinking, social media can help cultivate the kind of pan-African solidarity that would’ve excited the likes of Nkrumah.” Africa's revolution will be tweeted…if activists can harness the opportunity
There’s always opportunity. Lost in translation: The global streaming boom is creating a severe translator shortage
I like Slack and have often recommended it to clients. I am also a part of a couple of Slack communities with members from across the world. Perhaps because I use it on a micro scale, I haven’t experienced the negative side of it. Slackers of the world, Unite! got me thinking though.
I randomly came across Madison Calley’s Instagram page a year or so ago and have been following her ever since. It is interesting to see how deliberate she is with her work and her craft. The physical versus digital book debate continues to rage. I am happy to read either, having bought myself a Kindle years ago. I have fluctuated between the two formats over the years but, having run out of shelving space in the recent past, I am finding myself reading on the Kindle more. But, I still struggle with audiobooks, even though I am happy to listen to podcasts. If you are an audiobook person then Optimising Audiobooks - How to read and learn more without making time for it is for you. Another thing that Olof Hoverfalt has done is tracked every single piece of clothing he’s worn in for three years. Random but kinda dope. You can see the live data here.
Who was/is your favourite Wu-Tang emcee? Mine was and is the GZA. GZA’s “Liquid Swords”: A 20th Anniversary Retrospective pays proper justice to this album, even though it was written in 2015. In a few more years time, Liquid Swords will be 30, and it still bangs.
2020/2020 have been particularly heavy years with the loss and grief that we have all experienced. In the last few days, I have been listening to a playlist dedicated to Wandi Nzimande, who we lost earlier this year. To be honest, I still haven’t been able to listen to a discussion I had with him in 2020 that I shared on my podcast.
